YEE I-LANN: 2005 – 2016

Yee I-Lann
Ayala Museum, Manila

About

Ayala Museum and Silverlens are pleased to present Yee I-Lann: 2005–2016. A landmark exhibit, this is the first solo show for a Malaysian contemporary artist in the Ayala Museum.

Through her different series from the last eleven years, Yee I-Lann tells narratives of Southeast Asia’s turbulent past. She invites viewers to reflect on personal histories and dislocations while revealing a common human experience across the Southeast Asian archipelago—the Philippines included.

Yee I-Lann: 2005-2016 will be on view from August 30 to October 2 at the Ayala Museum, Makati Ave. cor. De La Rosa St. Greenbelt Park, Makati City 1224. A reception will be held at 6 pm on August 30, 2016 at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Gallery. The artist will be present and an Artist Talk moderated by Dr. Patrick Flores precedes the opening at 4 pm on August 30, 2016, also at the Ayala Museum Ground Floor Gallery.

For inquiries, contact info@silverlensgalleries.com or 09175874011. Entrance to this exhibition comes with the museum admission fee or pay P150 to see this exhibition only.

This exhibition is co-presented by Ayala Museum and Silverlens. Supported by Philippine Airlines.

Yee I-Lann has gained recognition internationally for her distinctive photomedia-based practice which seeks resonances across history, landscape, memory and cultural identity. Such layers necessitate an extensive and multi-layered visual vocabulary drawn from historical references, popular culture, archives and everyday objects.

Born in 1971 in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, Yee graduated from the University of South Australia (Adelaide, Australia) with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) in 1993 with a major in Photography and a minor in Cinematography. Her work has been exhibited in museums and international biennials. Recent exhibitions include Tabled, Silverlens Galleries, Gillman Barracks, Singapore (2014); Picturing Power, Tyler Rollins, New York (2014); Curators’ Series #7. A Special Arrow Was Shot In The Neck..., David Roberts Art Foundation, London, UK (2014); The (Post) Colonial Photostudio, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, UK (2013); Paris Photo (2013); Suspended Histories, Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (2013); Welcome to the Jungle: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia, Yokohama Museum of Art, Japan (2013); Art of Memory: Contemporary Textile Expressions, Jim Thompson Art Center, Bangkok, Thailand (2013); ArtJog’13: Maritime Culture, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2013). She was a member of the curatorial team for the 2013 Singapore Biennale. Yee also works in the film industry in Malaysia. Her most recent production role in 2014 was as Set Decorator for the television series Indian Summers (Season One, Episodes 14), a Channel 4 (UK)/PBS (US) production. Yee currently lives and works in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
