    Silverlens is pleased to announce it’s participation in the upcoming West Bund Art and Design in Shanghai, China presenting the work Adamadame (2017, mixed media) by Gabriel Barredo which will be part of the ArtReview Asia Xiàn Chǎng section curated by Aimee Lin. The curatorial concept originates in the Chinese characters for ‘Xiàn’ and ‘Chǎng’, which together mean the scene; on the spot; at the site. The section explores how artworks generate context — and how the ‘contemporary’ aspect of contemporary art is as much about space or place as it is about time.

    Gabriel Barredo's work creates entire opuses as he builds them through months of bricolage, sketching, painting, elevating his sculptures to nearly theatrical lengths, immersive of the viewer, featuring numerous pieces both large and small, some of them simple drawings, others motorized, along with object-led side narratives, all accompanied by sound and light. 

    His West Bund presentation, Adamadame (2017) is the artist's intricate commentary on the fluidity of gender, especially felt in contemporary times. Characterized by horror vacui, he fills all crevices of the human profile with symbolism and images that point towards the inner workings of the human mind.

    Gabriel Barredo's (b. 1957, Philippines) is meant to create entire opuses. He builds them through months of bricolage, sketching, painting, until his sculptures reach an immersive and theatrical scale, featuring numerous objects both large and small, some of them simple drawings, others motorised, along with object-led side narratives, all accompanied by sound and light.

    The highly reclusive artist has pioneered kinetic sculpture in the Philippines, and his works is included in many important collections. Most recently, the Singapore Art Museum acquired a large installation from his landmark exhibition Opera (2016, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila).
